What is the gold rate in KSA today?

Gold in Saudi Arabia today costs 525.37 SAR per gram for 24K, 481.64 SAR for 22K, 459.74 SAR for 21K and 394.07 SAR for 18K (الجمعة, 18 سبتمبر 2026). That is the market rate for the metal itself, before the shop adds its making charge — and it is identical nationwide, because it is derived from the global spot price and the fixed 3.75 SAR/USD peg.

What you will actually pay in the shop

The rate above buys you the gold. It is not the number on your invoice. Two things are added or subtracted at the counter, and neither has a published national figure:

  • Making charge (أجرة المصنعية). A per-gram fee for craftsmanship, set by each shop and each piece. Delicate work costs more per gram than a plain bangle or a bar. 15% VAT applies to the making charge, not to the gold itself.
  • The shop's margin when you sell back. Selling used gold pays you the market rate minus the shop's margin, and you do not get the making charge back. That is why bars hold value better than jewellery.

Investment bullion of 99% purity or higher is VAT-exempt in Saudi Arabia. Jewellery is not — the VAT sits on the making charge.

Ask for an itemised invoice showing weight, karat, making charge and VAT as separate lines. A shop that will not itemise is a shop to walk out of.

Why the price is the same in every Saudi city

Gold is quoted globally in US dollars per troy ounce. Saudi Arabia pegs the riyal to the dollar at a fixed 3.75, so converting the global price into riyals gives one number for the whole country. A dealer in Riyadh and a dealer in Jeddah start from exactly the same figure.

What genuinely varies between cities and between shops is the making charge and the buy-back margin. If a shop quotes you a "cheaper gold price," it is almost always quoting a lower making charge on a specific piece — not a different metal price. Compare making charges per gram, not headline prices.

Frequently asked questions

What is the gold price in Saudi Arabia today?

24K gold is 525.37 SAR per gram and 21K is 459.74 SAR per gram right now. These are market rates before the making charge, and they are the same in every Saudi city.

Which karat should I buy in Saudi Arabia?

21K is the most traded karat in the Saudi market and the default for jewellery. 24K is for bars and coins bought as savings — higher purity, minimal making charge, easier to sell back. 18K is chosen for design-led pieces and coloured gold because it is harder.

How much is one tola or one ounce of gold in SAR?

A troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, so pure gold works out to about 16,341 SAR per ounce today. One tola (11.664 g) of 24K is roughly 6,128 SAR at the current rate.

Is gold cheaper in Dubai than in Saudi Arabia?

The metal price is effectively the same — both follow the global spot price, and both currencies are pegged to the dollar. Differences come from making charges, retail competition and VAT treatment, not from the gold itself. Compare the final invoice, not the headline rate.

Do I pay VAT on gold in Saudi Arabia?

Investment-grade bullion at 99% purity or above is exempt. For jewellery, the 15% VAT is charged on the making charge rather than on the gold value, so the effective tax on a purchase is far below 15% of the total.

Can expats buy and sell gold in Saudi Arabia?

Yes. There is no nationality restriction on buying or selling gold at licensed shops. Bring ID for larger transactions and always keep the itemised invoice — it is what establishes weight and karat if you sell the piece later.
